Topic > Youth Sexuality and Sexting - 1452

A lot has changed over the years in terms of people's opinions about youth sexuality and sexting, and the rules and consequences associated with sexting. If we leap a generation or two into the contemporary world, we will realize that the social and sexual landscape has changed radically. Sex is less regulated and is in some ways less risky for many young Australians. More and more young people are having sex and more and more are doing it at a younger age. Social customs have changed. Feminist and gay rights social movements have mobilized for legal and social change. For young heterosexuals, effective contraception is widely available and pregnancy termination is legal and available through the public health system. Homosexual sex is legal and health and social support services for same-sex attracted young people are constantly increasing. (Lindsay, 2005, pp 86). Sexting can be defined as sexual content communicated via text messages, smartphones, or visual and web 2.0 activities such as social networking sites. It has been defined as the “exchange of sexual messages or images” (Livingstone et al., 2011) and “the creation, sharing, and forwarding of sexually suggestive nude or near-nude images” (Lenhart, 2009) via cell phones and/or Internet. There are many factors associated with sexting. This includes the fact that it is coercive, meaning that sexting does not refer to a single activity but rather a series of activities that may be motivated by sexual pleasure but are often linked to harassment, bullying and even violence. (Ringrose, Gill, Livingstone, & Harvey, 2012, pp 7). Although sexting can be considered a serious crime, many young people continue to commit the act. There are many reasons for...... middle of paper ......lly, Girlfriend and Cosmopolitan, all of which talk about sex and sexuality. Through this type of media these young adults try to understand who they are, what their sexuality is and what is considered acceptable and what is not. Music videos also influence the attitudes and behaviors of today's youth; but when we see women being sexualized and dancing sexually in a music video, it can be degrading towards women and can give us a negative label or reputation. Furthermore, not all music videos are like this, some reflect on sexuality which can influence the opinions of young people. Overall it is clear that sexting and youth sexuality have negative and positive effects on young people and other people's opinions, moral panic regarding youth sexuality is high but it can be avoided and will slowly decrease in the future.
