The betrayed becomes the traitor. The Revolutionary War era was tragic and bloody for the early settlers of Lycoming County. Full of soldiers who fight, thieves who steal, rats who snitch and traitors who betray. One of the most famous traitors and the most disgraced traitor was Benedict Arnold. Known as a notorious traitor to his once beloved country. But is the cheater really getting what he deserves? We must ask ourselves before judging the actions of a man: what led Benedict to betray his country? One stands up and betrays his country, after fighting for over three decades, wounded twice in courageous fights. What folly could cause such unpatriotic decisions by such a highly decorated general? Was it all just “getting up” from the beginning? Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut. He learned the trade of apothecary (pharmacy) and, in 1762, opened a book and drug store in New Haven, Connecticut. He also continued trade with the Caribbean islands. By 1774 Arnold had become one of the richest men in New Haven. In 1767 Arnold married the daughter of the New Haven County sheriff, Margaret Mansfield, who died a year later. In 1774 Arnold was commissioned captain of the Army of Connecticut. immediately after the start of the war he was promoted to colonel of the “Patriotic Forces”. Later that year Arnold and Ethan Allen led the capture of "Fort Ticonderoga" in New York on May 10, 1775. After which Arnold led over 1,100 soldiers to Canada. Without choice he collaborated with General Richard Montgomery in a failed assault on “Quebec” where Arnold's leg was seriously wounded in the assault and his courage earned him a promotion to brigadier general.
