As a man I have never known what it meant to be treated unequally, in the sense of not being able to do the same job as other men, or of being stigmatized and frowned upon for being a male. This was the history of women in the United States until the 1800s. This was the era when women who felt they should be treated equally in society finally found the courage to fight for what they believed in. They wanted to show everyone that people have the right to their freedom, regardless of gender. They also wanted to highlight that discriminating against people based on gender, sexual orientation, skin color, ethnicity, religion or culture is unethical. People with these beliefs were considered what we now call “feminists.” Feminists were considered evil, outlaws, and definitely disobedient to the United States and, of course, men. In reality all these women wanted was equal opportunities in life and freedom. These women knew it wouldn't be easy to achieve, but they were willing to put in the time and effort to achieve their goals. “Throughout history, women have worked to improve their lives in various ways, but historians often describe organized women's movements in the United States as two waves of feminism” (Kesselman, p. 555). These two waves were the beginning of a norm that changed the world, but unfortunately when they started society was in an epidemic where men were superior and did not want to be a part of these movements. The first wave, which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, had a goal to open up opportunities for women, focusing on their suffrage. The main goal was to obtain the right to vote for all women. In 1848 a convention was organized in Seneca Falls, New York, with a large... means of paper procedures relating to child custody, child support, and protection from abuse actions; and defended the rights of survivors of sexual assault” (Women's Law Project). Organizations like these are the beginning of how women can overcome their discrimination in today's world. I believe there are many other ways people can work towards these goals besides education in school. I believe this issue should be introduced to our children in their early stages of life. Parents should raise their children in a way where, as they grow up, they know how to treat women and people equally. The way I would do it is the same way that people involved in the two waves of feminism did it, the exposure. We need to expose these problems and situations around the world, the more exposure the more people will realize what is really happening and the more people will get involved..
