The novel A Modest Proposal, by Jonathan Swift is a satirical piece about the poverty of the Irish during the Irish Potato Famine. The author's credentials are that Swift himself is Irish and witnesses the problem himself. The author's purpose in writing the novel is to convince people to his proposal and help regenerate a poverty-stricken nation. The audience is aimed at the Irish and the rich. The public is supposed to be convinced of his "brilliant" plan. Ireland was facing poverty and a great depression during the 18th century. The richest kept getting richer and the poor kept getting poorer. Children and infants go hungry, and many parents cannot afford to care for children. There is an abundance of children which increases the nation's population. Swift claims to slow child population growth and reduce the number of children starving. The author's proposal is to sell the children to the rich or any interested buyer, then cook them with delicious taste and eat them. Or perhaps, Swift proposed using the leather and other parts for a “dress jacket” or other item of clothing. His argument is structured like a plan. This plan includes the process, price, quality and the possibility of the delicious taste that the baby has to offer. The premise of the proposal is that it is a last resort to resolve the poverty crisis in Ireland. Swift's character as a writer is sarcastic. In this piece the author writes in a satirical writing style, just like his other published novels. Swift is Irish and understands that the nation's people need help to restore the well-being of troubled Ireland. The author's tone towards his piece is not serious. He explains how he himself would not have attempted or p...... middle of paper ......nshired. In Swift's proposal he uses many appeals and satire to try to make a convincing proposal to save Ireland from extreme famine. and tragedies on the streets. His suggestion to kill children and sell them for “delicious stew” is an outrageous idea to save an economic crisis. Even though this is a satirical piece, the idea that Swift's mind was thinking and making a plan to "kill" children is disgusting. The proposal contains strong promises to resolve the crisis in Ireland, but it is definitely not the right way to do it. I believe Swift chose such an outrageous plan to capture the attention of government leaders and the rich and actually realize that there is a serious problem and that they have come up with crazy proposals like this to solve the crisis. The article is quite juxtaposed being funny and disturbing, but very well written by the author Jonathan Swift.
