Malcolm X once said “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that is power. Because they control the minds of the masses." In 1990, 59-year-old Delbert Ward was accused of killing his brother Bill Ward. Delbert was one of four brothers who lived on the family land and operated a small farm that produced cow's milk. During and after Delbert's trial, numerous media outlets preyed like vultures on the poorly educated man and the village. Given his poor background and appearance, the media portrayed Delbert as a savior who killed his brother in the same bed they had shared for years. The documentary “Brother's Keeper” investigated the truth behind Bill Ward's death. Presents the thesis that the media manipulates public opinion. The media manipulates public opinion using many techniques to influence the minds of the masses. The effectiveness of the media, the level of bias present, and the types of media sources used to represent information to determine how the media influences public opinion, as well as to address the opposing point of view on the topic. Various different media techniques are used to inform people about important things happening around them, including guilt by association, making it funny, ridiculous and labeling. Guilt by association involves connecting a person to something despised by society. Another technique used by the media is to make it funny. It is different from other media techniques because it uses humor as a way to manipulate people. Ridicule and labeling is a method in which the media uses attractive adjectives that fit the situation to describe people to influence how the public portrays them.
