The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is part of the Department of Justice. The United States Marshals Service employs ninety-four United States Marshals, all of whom are appointed by the President. A marshal is appointed in each federal court district. The headquarters is located in Washington, DC. This is the oldest and most versatile federal police service. While this service is often overlooked, it is critical to maintaining order in law enforcement. This service arrests approximately 337 fugitives every day. In addition to having offices in the United States, they also have offices abroad in Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The US Marshals Service is responsible for detaining the most dangerous fugitives. This service provides many services which include prisoner management and sponsorship of the Witness Security Program. The United States Marshal Service created a program that began in 1955. The US Marshals Service Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System (JPATS) is responsible for managing prisoners. This is also commonly referred to as "Con Air". Before this program, prisoner transportation was very complicated. To transfer a prisoner long distances, a block of marshals had to accompany a single prisoner on a commercial airline. This posed a threat to innocent civilians and was also very costly to taxpayers. This program houses and transports all federal prisoners between prisons, detention centers, courts and other locations. US Marshals transport and detain prisoners not only for the initial punishment, but for the entire sentence. They assume full custody of prisoners, regardless of the government agency that arrested them. They are responsible for keeping Americans' lives safe after testimonies. It gave witnesses and their families the chance to start their lives over without fear of threat or harm. Most importantly, this program provides employment and medical care. Furthermore, I believe it has also helped capture many criminals because it gives civilians the opportunity to testify without the fear of their lives being in danger. Because of this important program, many dangerous criminals have been convicted thanks to the courageous testimony of witnesses. Furthermore, it is useful because witnesses can choose to return to their previous identities if they wish.
