Topic > Character Analysis of Beatrice in Much Ado About...

Beatrice is, without a doubt, one of the strongest female characters Shakespeare ever invented in his time writing. Shakespeare shows, through Beatrice, how every woman should act in a time when only men were capable of even being in control. In this era, or in the Renaissance, no woman had free will; they were always told what they could and could not do, as well as who they should marry. In the play "Much Ado About Nothing" Beatrice has many qualities, but the ones that stand out the most in the play are: her independence, her exuberance and, of course, her openness to challenge male subjection. From the beginning of the play Beatrice shows her independence but openly admits to everyone that under no circumstances does she want to get married, especially to Mr. Benedick. Which was hinted at throughout the play, he had a past with Beatrice and the "affair" ended with her getting hurt and him going into battle. She makes this clear in their battle of wits after he says “….But it is certain that I am loved by all women, only you except you; and I wish I could discover in my heart that I don't have a hard heart, because I really don't love anyone. (A1; S1; L122-125). After hearing Benedetto say this, she responds with “A dear happiness for women. Otherwise they would have found themselves in trouble with a valuable suitor. I thank God and my sangfroid, I'm your humor for this. I'd rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me. (A1; S1; L126-130). This was basically her way of telling Benedick that she doesn't want anyone to swear they love her when in reality the love isn't there. He would rather not deal with the nonsense of someone who isn't true to their word. Also at another moment in the play, Leonato tells his... middle of paper... heart to the market. (A4; S1; L 315-321). The moment Hero was wrongly accused was the moment Beatrice demonstrated this most. He believed that, for what he had done, Claudio deserved to die. He wanted no bad deed to go unpunished and what he thought fit was for Benedick to challenge Claudius to a dule and he didn't want Benedick to stop until he was dead. There are by far many things that make up a strong woman, at least in the eyes of many. Being independent, fighting for what is right, standing your ground and being feisty when necessary are just some of the qualities that make a woman strong. But under that heard appearance, or mask, of fake emotions there is always a woman dying to be loved and cared for. Women don't like to be controlled in any way but life isn't always fair and they find a way to deal with it, or better yet, they find a way around it.
