Genetically modified organisms are “an organism whose genome has been altered to enhance the expression of desired physiological traits or the production of desired biological products”. http://www.merriam-webster.com/concise/genetically%20modified%20organism%20(GMO). The United States first approved genetically modified foods for human consumption in 1995. The techniques used to produce the genetically engineered organisms include recombinant DNA cloning technology. The primary uses of genetically modified organisms mainly concern the sectors of agriculture and biomedical research. GMOs undermine numerous benefits to society, including increased crop yields and the development of new therapeutic agents that prevent and treat a wide variety of human diseases. However there are some concerns about the use of genetically modified organisms which include risks to human health and the creation of insecticide-resistant superbugs. This essay will provide evidence to support the evidence that genetic modifications of crops produce better results than selective breeding or mutation. Crops have one or more genes that encode traits desired for insertion. The genes come from similar or additional plant species or even from unrelated organisms. These traits that are targeted through genetic engineering are often the same ones that are followed by conventional selection. One advantage of genetically modified crops is increased crop yield; this means that the crop will produce more yields than a crop that is not modified. A significant portion of genetically modified crops is grown in developed countries. Over the past two years there has been a steady increase in the amount of… half the paper… productivity. Genetically modified crops reduce growing time, therefore allowing crops to reach the market sooner. Increased total yield and stress tolerance allows farmers to grow crops in previously hostile locations. This has become even more essential as less agricultural land is available to augment the needs of the population. Genetically modified organisms help increase disease resistance in crops. Creating plants that are genetically resistant to diseases such as pests and herbicides initially reduces the danger of crop failures. Crop losses due to insect pests are not only financially painful for farmers but also for developing countries leading to hunger. Additionally, reducing pesticide use helps reduce the overall cost of marketing crops. This benefits both the farmer and the consumer.
