With the advancement of technology and the introduction of the Internet much has been gained and also lost since its establishment. Since the mid-1990s the Internet has brought us together and allowed ideas to emerge on occasion and be put into practice as they were meant to be discovered. With the advancement of technology it has allowed us to connect in unimaginable ways. Specific progress regarding the Internet has certainly made our lives easier and in a way allowed us to be lazier. Looking at the bigger picture, the Internet has advanced the human population in great ways. However, if you look at the good the Internet has done, you see everything it has done to disable us. I currently have several electronic devices in my home with data capabilities such as a corner, a tablet, a laptop, an iPod, a Garmin, and the newest cell phone, but I want to have the latest and greatest even more. It seems absurd how many electronic devices we have and what are they for? On each of the devices listed they allow us to be connected in some way; connected to a book or a wealth of information, otherwise known as the Internet, and most importantly, we have people at our fingertips. What happened to using a map to find directions or reading a book for leisure or to learn new knowledge? Having the Internet readily available has made us forget the simple things that I for one take for granted. I can't remember the last time I had to look for a book at the library that I couldn't download online. Only recently have I taken reading from the screen to paper. After reading The Shallows by Nicholas Carr he stated the words I wanted to avoid. I was lazy and I was the typical American... middle of paper... things are moving more and more online. In ¾ of my classes most of the homework and quizzes are done online and during my last term one of my instructors predicted that schools will start to have more and more online classes as they are less expensive. While digitalization has made our lives easier and is a better resource, we may be going too far in the years to come. The Internet has improved our lives, while disabling them at the same time. We will continue to see new advances and admire them, but one important thing we need to remember is to not let the Internet and technology run our lives. Becoming so dependent will hit us hard if there comes a time when we don't have the resources to use technology and know how to do something, maybe the old fashioned way isn't such a bad thing. Allow yourself to manage the Internet and not manage yourself.
