There Are No Children Here; by Alex Kotlowitz is the story of two brothers and their Pharaoh mother, Lafayette and LaJoe Rivers, growing up in the late 1980s in the (HHH) Henry Horner Homes, a housing project in Chicago. In the story the boys try to hold on to their youth as they see constant gang violence, the deaths of people close to them and their brother is in prison and their father struggles with drug addiction. In Horner, there are two gangs that claim it as their area, and the Rivers family always hides from all the shootings. The apartment they live in is so shabby and mostly too old. Their mother, LaJoe, does everything she can to keep her children out of danger in the community. Children must also guard against danger and the rapid loss of their childhood. The kids have trouble having friends because most of the other kids are involved in gangs or dealing drugs. Pharaoh desperately tries to maintain his innocence and is very dedicated to his education. Unfortunately Lafayette befriended a mischievous boy named Rickey and was lured into a gang. There are a lot of problems in the neighborhood and even with LaJoe's positive attitude, he can't keep his family out of the projects (HHH). In an environment like the one shown in Alex Kotlowitz's book "There Are No Children Here", the way a young person develops is greatly influenced by the physical environment and actions that take place around him. As most of the city's children have gone through adolescence, they have witnessed and experienced many tragedies and heartaches that even an adult would find disturbing. They sold drugs, joined gangs, probably saw their best friends get killed or even killed in the middle of the paper... Rules were broken, some rules are constantly changing. Some norms in the story are that poverty is common and people learn to adapt to it. “If I grow up, I would like to be a bus driver” (10) this statement was made by Lafayette to show that growing up in the ghettos is very tiring and tiring. Socialization is the term used to refer to the process of inheriting and spreading norms, customs and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary to participate in their society. Socialization is, in short, the means by which social and cultural continuity is achieved. Ricky and Lafayette and four other kids form their own gang called the Four Hustlers. (218) the environment the kids live in begins to affect their lives because they feel they have to survive, and joining gangs would help them blend in.
