In the technology-driven society of Fahrenheit 451, where books are banned and everyone's favorite pastime is the mindless task of watching TV, it is rare for anyone to have any intellectual curiosity. However, light-skinned Clarisse is different. He has a different vision of society and is a breath of fresh air for firefighter Guy Montag. Clarisse serves as a window into the path of knowledge and understanding for Montag and opens his mind to the idea of books and intellectual awareness. As the book begins, a pattern forms where Guy Montag begins to gain intellectual curiosity. Montag's revealer is Clarisse. Guy Montag was walking home when he meets Clarisse. They start talking when Clarisse asks "do you ever read the books you burn?" (8). Of course Montag laughed and replied “that's against the law”(8). Guy is clearly still under the impression that books are just as bad as society wants him to believe. He never met anyone who asked him if he read books. After arriving at Montag's house, Clarisse asks Montag a question. "Are you happy?" he said. "I what?" he cried. This seems to be a foreign question to Montag, because happiness was not in question when you live a boring life staring at the living room walls every day. People living in this society don't seem to question happiness because their minds couldn't think deeper than what TV show they would watch. Clarisse asking this question opens Montag's mind and allows him to see what is wrong with the society he lives in. It allows him to become curious, thus ultimately leading him to books; thanks to the influence Clarisse has on him. The conversation between Montag and Clarisse seems to have a quick impact on Montag's life. He begins to question the unrealistic ban… in the middle of the paper…” (53). Stealing books, disloyalty to the boss, and breaking the law are all new behaviors. The need for knowledge and the desire to know beyond what he is taught cause his anomalous behavior and demonstrate how his lifestyle has completely changed. This pattern continues throughout the book and it all begins after his multiple conversations with Clarisse. It has such a great influence on him that it even impacts his actions. In conclusion, Clarisse shares her outlook on life and introduces Montag to the wonders of books and knowledge. Soon after talking to her a few times, Montag begins to imitate her personality and see the world as she sees it. Clarisse metaphorically serves as a window between Montag's old life and the life Clarisse presents to him. After the discovery of books due to his renowned intellectual curiosity, he continues the path towards awareness and wisdom.
