Road trips are known for being fun adventures. When someone says they are going on a trip, people expect them to go and see beautiful places and then return. Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, and Jack Kerouac's On the Road are about road trips, but these trips aren't about adventure. Duke from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sal from On the Road, and Steinbeck from Travels with Charley all go on the road because of the American push. I'm on the road too and even though I think it's not a road trip I'm moving and it's because of the American driving. The American drive is the need to go and be on the move and it started because people were unhappy with their current lives and wanted to do more. They have embarked on the journey to find happiness and success. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas chronicles Hunter S. Thompson's trip to Las Vegas. He portrays himself as Duke and goes on a trip with his friend Gonzo. This trip seems like a disaster in people's eyes. They are drunk and high all the time, which leads them to drive recklessly and be carefree. Duke and Gonzo offer a ride to a hitchhiker and Duke tells him “I want you to know that we are going to Las Vegas to find the American dream. That's why we rented this car. It was the only way to do it. Can you figure it out” (2)? The American dream is to find money and succeed with all the opportunities America has to offer. Duke came from California to Las Vegas to write an article and would be paid for that article. He couldn't find money or success in California and so when he had his opportunity he took it. He wanted to make money and he tried. When they were at Circus Cir......middle of paper......I wasn't happy because I couldn't have the success I have today. I will be getting my high school diploma from a private school on Sunday and this would not have been possible in Türkiye. However, the journey still continues and it is thanks to the American push. Road trips are meant to be fun and are meant to let people see places, but they can have a deeper meaning. They could be about being successful and making money like it was for Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It could be about finding the true meaning of America like it was for Steinbeck from Traveling with Charley or it could be about being happy and successful like it was for Sal from On the Road. All three characters and I have the American drive. We want to be in motion and achieve something because we tend to want more of what we already have and we want to be happy about it.
