I chose the article “An Exploratory Analysis of the Acquired Capability Scale for Suicide in Male Prisoners” (Smith et al., 2013). This article presents a study in which inmates were given various scales/questionnaires to self-report life events that might cause them to contemplate or attempt suicide. “Worldwide, suicide is the leading cause of death among prisoners and accounts for half of prison deaths” (Smith et al., 2013). Since there are no studies on the theories underlying suicide and inmates, this study used the Acquired Capacity for Suicide Scale on a selected number of inmates. Other tests/measurements used were the Painful and Provocative Life Events Scale, the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (Smith et al., 2013).
