Childhood obesity is increasing dramatically, causing the numbers to skyrocket, leaving the United States with the highest percentage of children and adolescents suffering from obesity. To find a solution to this worldwide problem, we must determine what is causing this intolerable problem. According to Michelle Obama, as she stated in the “Speaking Out” article, “If patterns don't change by 2031, half of Americans will suffer from obesity.” (Obama, 2013) Obesity has no justification; has numerous factors that lead children to be obese. Given the multiple reasons that have led to obesity, there are several precautions you can take to avoid this unhealthy condition and prevent it from happening. First of all, why is even just a little extra weight so bad? Obesity doesn't mean having a couple of extra pounds. Obesity is a condition and occurs when there is an excessive amount of fat in the body, which protrudes from the organs. This condition can lead to the development of numerous other life-threatening diseases. Obesity can lead to a variety of multiple unhealthy conditions. Taken from ASU's Health Issue Collection, "Obesity can lead to other chronic to acute diseases, some very serious and fatal, such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, coronary vascular disease, heart attack, stroke and even cancer. All these diseases are easily preventable if you can educate yourself and learn to be more careful about what you eat and the amount of physical activity you do. They are all 4 of the 10 main causes of death related to obesity and are direct causes of obesity.” (ASU, 2005) It may not be one “thing” that makes you obese, but a pattern of unhealthy choices that can lead to an unhappy future.F…. .. half of the paper...... reward or withhold food as punishment. Keep the refrigerator stocked with non-fat or low-fat milk and fresh fruits and vegetables instead of soft drinks and snacks high in sugar and fat. Serve at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Encourage children to drink water rather than drinks with added sugars, such as soft drinks, sports drinks and fruit juices.", taken from CHI. That long list is a “dummy trial,” as Sarah explained, to prevent the development of obesity. (Hall, 2012) Childhood obesity is not to be taken lightly. A major percentage of deaths in America result from the “strands” of health problems caused by obesity. Our world is changing right before our eyes. If patterns don't change by 2031, half of our Americans will be obese. If every person took one precaution to avoid childhood obesity, we could make a big change for America.
