Today, the advancement of technology has given people remote flexibility wherever they want to travel. As a result of this progress, more and more people are willing to travel, not only for leisure, but also to receive medical care. This action is called medical tourism (Hall, 2011). Medical tourism is not a new phenomenon, however, not all countries enjoy the medical tourism label. This particular essay will evaluate the research findings of Hanefeld et al. (2013) on medical tourism in a specific country, the United Kingdom, and its costs and benefits to the National Health Service. In this article Hanefeld et al. (2013) examine the challenges and opportunities that may arise as a result of medical tourism in relation to the UK's National Health Service (NHS). The authors used data obtained through analysis of the United Kingdom's International Passenger Survey (IPS); interviews with 77 UK residents, 63 other UK stakeholders, NHS policy makers, UK citizens; and a review of published literature to identify the effect of inbound and outbound medical tourism on the UK National Health System associated with costs and benefits. Their research concerns the new national healthcare system that will serve greater market elements given its challenges and opportunities. The authors are aware of the paucity of literature on medical tourism which is often based on opaque data from private consultancy firms or unverified media reports. Therefore, the authors would like to present stronger evidence by conducting research involving society, healthcare professionals and NHS managers. From their research, the authors found that more British patients travel out of the country for medical treatment than foreign patients arriving in the UK. Research indicates that South Asian countries, particularly the UK, seek treatment abroad rather than locally. After reading the article several times, I discovered the importance of methodology when it comes to doing research. There are various ways of data collection, however, the author should choose the most appropriate method to generate reliable and valid results. Failure to choose the method can cause confusion and unresolved problems. I chose this article on medical tourism because the author provided the content with a simple writing style. So I was able to understand what and why medical tourism works. Overall, the development of medical tourism should be monitored continuously. The authors suggest that medical tourism in the UK National Health Service should be calculated correctly to make better decisions for health policy makers. Finally, information on incoming foreign patients should be collected to develop future research in this area.
