Topic > The Benefits of Becoming a Pet Owner - 2141

Draft 3According to the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society website, on average every single day ten thousand dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States alone. Most of these animals were perfectly healthy, normal, suitable pets that were never adopted but were euthanized due to overpopulation. Humans have kept pets since ancient times. Centuries ago they were kept primarily as food, a source of material such as fur and as a hunting aid, but nowadays they are companions and the thought of killing, eating and wearing them seems senseless. In this fast-paced and stress-filled modern age, everyone needs a source of relief. Most people turn to medicinal or recreational drugs and alcohol. However, there are much better and healthier alternatives, such as owning a pet. A pet can be as effective as any drug at relieving stress and anxiety. Even if it's not all easy, it's worth it in the end. Owning a pet is an amazing experience and more and more people should experience the joy and benefits that come with it, but as with everything there are some obstacles and inconveniences that may seem daunting but can be easily prevented or resolved. Can owning pets make you unhappy and unhealthy? Although unlikely, it is possible. Pets can carry a variety of diseases and parasites that can easily spread to their owner and his or her family. According to an article titled “Could Owning a Pet Actually Make Us Less Happy and Less Healthy?” on scienceandreligiontoday.com “You are about 100 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed by a dog than by a venomous snake.” and “pets are a major cause of neighborly conflict (second only to late-night noise).” Many pets can be dangerous on their own, such as poison...... middle of paper...... life of love and compassion. There's a pet for everyone, no matter who they are. There are more than enough pets around and many different species to suit all personality types and lifestyles. Pets offer amazing benefits to their owners that will improve many aspects of their lives. Unfortunately, many of these benefits are not known to working people and are instead influenced by misconceptions that make owning a pet seem less desirable. If there's anything we learn from this article, it's that owning a pet is an absolutely amazing experience that more people should have. It is unfortunate that some people are being robbed of this opportunity due to misconceptions spread by uninformed people. Hopefully in the future people will reconsider adopting a pet or at least take the time to talk to someone about adopting and saving a life while improving their own..
