In 2001, 554 murders occurred in Canada, which was 23% fewer than the number of murders committed before the death penalty was abolished. Knowing this, capital punishment does not deter crime. On the other hand, numerous people will dispute that God supports capital punishment. In Bryan Fischer’s essay, “Christian Doctrine Supports Capital Punishment,” Fischer quotes the Bible stating that God says, “I will call upon his fellow men a reckoning for the life of man. Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his image".(35) In essence, this means that murder destroys the image of God and for this reason God demands reparative action for the damage. But even so, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) essay “Christian Doctrine Does Not Support Capital Punishment” argues against the belief that God supports capital punishment. The gospel promotes forgiveness for every sin committed (USCCB 40). Society needs to realize that people can change, no matter what they have done in the past. Prisoners and people who have committed the worst crimes are able to change and ultimately find the right path through prayer and Bible study (USCCB
