Relations between Turkey and AmericaINTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this article is to search the relations between Turkey and America from the cold war to current issues which I will study about the situations developing between America and Turkey starts from the end of the Cold War such as the “Truman Doctrine”, the “Missile Crisis” and the “Gulf War”. The policies of the United States and Turkey's reactions against those policies will be the subject of this article.COLD WARThe Soviet Union and the United States began a military competition after World War II. The Soviet Union, after the end of World War II, wanted to expand the buffer zone between itself and the Western world. In addition to the original Polish territory, the USSR established communism in Romania, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany. The Kremlin believed that the United States would seek to spread its capitalist ideals throughout Europe and, eventually, the Soviet Union itself. Furthermore, the United States saw the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe as the beginning of a plan to spread communism throughout the world. This misunderstanding was the beginning of the Cold War. Relations between America and Türkiye have improved since 1947. Turkey's geopolitical position plays an important role in this relationship. The Truman Doctrine The first anti-communist action by the United States was, in 1947, to begin providing economic aid to countries under pressure from outside powers. When Britain announced it would withdraw aid to Greece and Türkiye, responsibility passed to the United States. America was afraid of the spread of communism due to the fact that President Harry S. Truman requested military and economic aid for Greece and Turkey and established a doctrine called the Truman Doctrine that would guide US diplomacy for the next forty years . The United States was also following the events in Türkiye. Turkey's weak government faced Soviet pressure to share control of the strategic Dardanelles Strait. Furthermore, Turkey could prevent the expansion of the Soviet Union in the Mediterranean and the Middle East and could constitute the theater of a probable war for the Soviet Union. Furthermore Turkey had an important geopolitical position for the United States, Turkey could have provided an important geopolitical advantage to the United States in a war with the Soviet Union. These were the most important reasons why the US helped Turkey… middle of paper… everyone in the 21st century has good relations). Especially after the September 11 attacks, the declaration of war on terrorism by the United States, Turkey decided to side with the United States. Turkey had a lot of problems with terrorism (especially the PKK). Turkey had an important geopolitical position because the United States did not want to lose Turkey. As long as the economic crisis exists in Türkiye, Turkish foreign policy will depend more on the United States and the International Monetary Fund. But looking at current events on the international scene, especially the visit of President Ecevit of Turkey to the United States on January 14, 2002, we see that US-Turkey relations are improving.
