Most Rastafarians believe that there is only one God. They refer to their God as Jah, the biblical name. Everyone also believes that Haile Selassie is divine and that the Bible is the direct word of God and contains hidden messages significant to people of African descent. Rastafarians also believe that all those of African descent, such as the Israelites, must be liberated from their oppressors, the Babylonians. For this reason, Rastafarians did not allow anyone from white society to join their religion. They wanted freedom from the Babylonians, who they considered to be those of white society. However, over time, Rastafarians began to allow whites to convert to Rastafarianism. This is because Rastafarians practice peace, equality and unity. It no longer matters where someone comes from. Anyone can become a Rastafarian. Since then many whites converted to this religion. Rastafarianism is still not as common as other religions in the world.
