Topic > Harvey Milk: A Great American Hero - 1181

When we think of the great heroes of American history, those who caused great change are usually the first to come to mind. Great American heroes are those who fight for change, even against social norms, to change people's lives for the better. Heroes are those who inspire others and put others before themselves. Heroes don't let success change them and never stop working towards their goals. They don't let other people, fear, or failure stop or slow them down. And in some cases, a hero will make the ultimate sacrifice for what he believes is right. The greatest heroes of American history live on in the memories and thoughts of the people whose lives were forever changed by these people and the impact they had on our nation. Although he faced the hardships of the 1930s financial crisis and a failing boxing career, James. J Braddock displays the hallmarks of a hero by making sacrifices for his family, doing the right thing, fighting pain and failure, and risking his reputation for the sake of his family. The film "Cinderella Man" follows the fall and rise of James J. Braddock, husband, father and once great boxer. Like many others, the Great Depression hit Braddock and his family hard. After some disappointing losses and a broken hand, Braddock's career was over. He didn't have a stable job, but this never stopped him from going to the port every day in the hope of being chosen to work. He worked despite the pain of a broken hand because he needed to provide for his family. Braddock refused to give up on his family, even going so far as to skip meals to ensure his children had enough to eat. He also refused to give up his morals. His family... at the center of the card... started the boom in the gay rights movement, and that movement has only gained more momentum and support over the years since he died. He continues to inspire people to this day; gay and straight. I hope to apply Harvey Milk's heroic characteristics to my life every day. I want to be courageous and unafraid to stand up to injustice. I want to not be afraid to be who I am. I want to inspire others and give them hope for a better life where all citizens are equal. Harvey Milk paid the ultimate sacrifice because he refused to be afraid. He refused to stay in the closet. Harvey Milk was outspoken and refused to let society treat him and other gay citizens as if they were not human. He sought to be a source of inspiration and hope and to have a lasting impact. Harvey Milk was a great American hero in 1977 and he is a great American hero today.
