They must be taught right and wrong in a harsher way than in other cultures. According to (Coley, 2014), “Results revealed that greater physical discipline experienced in both early and late childhood predicted higher externalizing behaviors when youth were in eighth grade, with a stronger association for Whites than youths African Americans". African Americans will spank and punish our children when they disobey. White American cultures do not believe in punishing their children. They would prefer to try alternative methods such as time out or counting to a certain number to get the child to behave. Many of them spare the rod and spoil the child, that is, they spoil him to the core and give him what they want. Many of their children don't know what a spanking or punishment is. Their children often respond when told to do something. Sometimes it makes you wonder who is the parent and who is the child. In the past our mothers would give us that look and we knew we had to stop doing what we were doing. There are also white Americans who have many children, but I think they are a minority compared to blacks. According to (Coconi, 2013), “in a 2002 study by the American Sociological Association, a large number of African American mothers were found to take an authoritarian approach to parenting compared to their white, middle-class counterparts.” Many African Americans and white Americans do not have the same beliefs when it comes to raising children.
