Late 19th and early 20th century Europe was the result of the formation of new ideas, industrialization and new nations. Every nation in Europe at the time preached nationalism or at least thought about how it might affect them for better or worse. “Giovane Italia” written by Giuseppe Mazzini is the oath taken by the members of “Giovane Italia”. This was a society dedicated to the cause of Italian unity. (Perry, page 114). . "The Semitic race against the Teutonic one" is a document which expresses the desire to close the German borders to the Jewish people. (Perry, page 146). Hermann Ahlward was the author of this document and also a member of the Riechstag, an anti-Semitic group. (Perry, page 146). It seems that all European nations were simply finding a way to better themselves, and they didn't care whether they had to use racism or nationalism. The European nations would have tried anything. Racism is the belief that genetic factors constituting race, ethnicity, or nationality are a primary determinant of human traits and abilities and that ethnic differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. This is the definition of racism, a horrible cause that has at times damaged our human world. Old Germany seems to me to be one of the best nations at displaying racism, if you can be good at it. Herman Ahlward immediately sets to work to destroy the Jewish race in "The Semitic Race Against the Teutonic One". He says that "the Jews as a whole are to be regarded as harmful" and that Jewish traits do not accord with the traits of the Teutons. (Perry, page 147). The document says that Jews are different in everything, even in their way of thinking. The text wants Germans to be Germans and Jews to be Jews, and then it even goes on to say that... middle of paper... and created racism. This is not good; people are equal in every sense. How do you remain nationalist without becoming racist? Simply allow other people to become part of your nation. Let them experience the joy of having culture. People want to feel like they belong, I think the greatest thing you can give someone is to accept who they are. I think instead of having nationalism towards a particular race or country, it should be nationalism towards the human race; not world peace, but an agreement that we are all human beings and can live freely with each other. War should not be caused by the color of someone's skin or the look of their eyes, or the difference in their hair, or even by religion. War should only happen if necessary and if someone has hurt you, stolen from you, or harmed you. Becoming a perfect nationalist nation means accepting others into your culture.
