In “Homage to Hips”, the hips are of fundamental importance because they are a reference to the author and other women who also have dreams. In the following lines Clifton (2014) states “these hips are also free. They don't like to be held back." She proclaims that if women have self-confidence, then their hips will not be tied to one place but free to travel to new destinations. It is obvious that the woman has a high self-image. Hips have opportunities, other options and nothing stops them from being successful and this is a strong reference to the fact that women have the power to move forward.
