Inclusion Classroom Model; Yes or no? ProblemInclusion of all students in classrooms has been an ongoing issue for the past twenty-five years (Noll, 2013). The controversy is: Should special education students be placed in an inclusion setting or should they be placed in a special education classroom? If the answer is yes to all special education students being placed in inclusion, then what should the inclusion model look like? Every student must receive an adequate and free education. According to the Individual Education Act (IDEA), all students should be placed in the least restrictive learning environment (Noll, 2013). Those who support a model of inclusion for all students argue that students with disabilities should be placed in an inclusive setting with the idea that all special education students will benefit from an inclusive setting with their peers in special education. general education. A context of inclusion will provide academic growth and social growth. Placing special education students in a general education classroom would also help students respect and accept those students who are different. Students should be placed in an inclusive context whenever possible (Noll, 2013). Mara Sapon-Shevin's model of inclusion supports the idea that students should not be classified based on their disability, there should be a healthy educational culture in the classroom that promotes acceptance of all students regardless of differences in religion, race or disability (Noll, 2013). Sapon – Shevin states that when students feel uncomfortable around their peers who are different from them this situation can be a teaching moment for the teacher, in other words educate student students about the differences of others, not just disabilities, b ...... middle of paper...... support staff must accompany them. I am an independent teacher and I know the needs of students and the behaviors that students may adopt. Over the years of teaching in a self-contained environment with students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, along with medical needs I have learned about medical procedures and how to manage behaviors, whereas a general education teacher has no experience in any of these areas. Leadership training should be implemented on IEPs, modifications, and accommodations for general education teachers. General education teachers should also be trained in using the expertise of special education teachers in modifying, adapting, and differentiating instruction. We are a team and the goal we work towards is for all of our students on our campus to be successful, general education and special education students.
