The Foundational Knowledge Standard provides for the preparation of individuals for roles in the reading profession and includes the main theories, research and best practices that share an agreement of acceptance in the field of reading . Individuals entering the profession of reading should understand the profession's historically shared knowledge and develop the ability to act on that knowledge responsibly. (Standard IRA, 2010). This semester I really learned how to develop the ability to learn from my previous experiences and contemplate my practices in a systematic way to benefit students' rigor. Drawing on several decades of cognitive science research on human learning, the knowledge is domain-specific and contextualized. Social experience and context play a role in the construction and development of knowledge (IRA Standards, 2010). Knowledge in the field of reading includes knowledge based on archival research and practical knowledge that reflects the wisdom of practice. Knowledge represents the currently shared content of the reading field, subject to change over time as new knowledge and understanding is acquired. This is what drives educators to have their own teaching philosophies. Each educator develops their ability to learn from experiences and contemplates their practices in a systematic way. It was only through the many experiences I had in a multitude of classes, during my university studies, that I was able to build my own teaching philosophy and stick to it. Foundational knowledge, both related to ideas about how things work or why they work happen, and evidence-based/research-based foundations are critically important because they are the building blocks on which reading pedagogy is based and are n… ... halfway through the document ......referenced to meet the needs of individual children and for children who share a variety of group characteristics” (IRA Standards, 2010). We can do this through professional development activities and individual, hands-on reading support for educators. Research has shown that the quality of teaching is one of the most important factors in improving student achievement. In order for teachers, school and district leaders to be as effective as possible, they continually expand their knowledge and skills to implement best educational practices. Effective professional learning is based on research related to adult learning and organizational change, as well as research on reading acquisition, development, assessment, and instruction (IRA Standards, 2010). Creating and maintaining professional learning has many implications and applications for reading professionals.
