Topic > Jonathon Swift's Influence in A Modest Proposal

Author and writer Jonathan Swift displays his influential qualities in his groundbreaking text titled A Modest Proposal. Swift's aim was simply to shock the people who read him with a proposal he knew was anything but modest. During this period, Ireland had enormous poverty along with overpopulation and distorted trade with Great Britain. His immodest proposal suggested the sale of children for food which would take care of the overpopulation and poverty levels in Ireland. A proposal like this would undoubtedly leave the reader dismayed by such an idea, and Swift's aim is to enjoy these reactions from the reader. It adopts a confusing and overwhelming tone to persuade Irish citizens to actually take notice of the problems that exist in society. Swift writes that the issue begins in Dublin, Ireland. Living in poverty, the streets and alleys of Ireland are often overflowing with children begging for money. Mothers are forced to give their time to beg for their children and children are basically raised as beggars and thieves. Jonathan Swift's proposal is to prevent poor children from becoming a burden on their parents or the country, and to make them useful to the people. The satirical text by author Jonathan Swift aims to draw attention to the problems experienced by the Irish people. He wanted the British to realize what they were doing and enact reforms that would fix the problem they had helped cause. The main point of this text is that poverty in Ireland was so severe that the Irish poor are less recognized in society and people can benefit by killing some of their children to gain resources. John is doing this... middle of the paper... oh folks. Even though this proposal is satirical, it makes his point come across as strong, where it would really scare people into knowing what's going on in the world. That this proposal could still turn into a possibility. Although readers think Jonathan Swift is absurd, he does a great job of making a solid argument. When Swift wrote this lyric she was trying to instill fear and disgust and being a reader of this story, I felt that way. The whole point of this lyric was for Jonathan Swift to propose his solution to the problem of poverty in Ireland and really scare people. in noticing the problems that exist in society. Swift supports his proposal with facts and evidence that demonstrate that his proposal is a possibility. If the world really doesn't seem to realize that poverty can turn into a huge situation if nothing is done, for those in need.
