More than a hundred years ago the idea of agriculture and food consumption was very different from today. Regulation, health education, research and technology, food processing, marketing and wholesaling have changed the food industry and agriculture itself. Before going to the market or shopping meant going to your garden where you knew where everything was grown and how it was cared for. Nowadays most people don't raise their own animals or grow their own vegetables, but turn to a large chain or even a small local store to purchase their food. When it comes to food security and food production, large and small farms are negatively affected in many different sectors. The current issues surrounding food safety and food production are that because there are some large facilities in operation whose food production is causing food poisoning and food contamination nationwide, the public wants more regulation and centralization on farms, the which is therefore putting financial pressure on local farms, animal husbandry and our food is subject to terrorist attacks because only more than half of our nation's food is produced in the same place. I believe the way to solve our problem is to be informed and get involved. One of the major issues facing agricultural security and production today is the fact that a few large facilities produce most of our food. Because our food is produced, cleaned and handled in one place, this causes nationwide poisoning and contamination of our meats and vegetables. For example, four companies produce 80% of America's beef and one company produces 30% of our milk. (p.388) This means that when an epidemic occurs it is more difficult to recall all the product because most stores across the nation sell the food. It also means that more and more people will be affected and become ill. If a local store sold bad spinach to five customers in a small town, it would be easier to control, manage, track, and inform those customers instead of having a large amount of people get sick. Two hundred Americans in 26 states became ill from spinach that contained E. Coli. (p.388) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that our food supply sickens 76 million people, puts more than 300,000 in hospitals, and kills 5,000 Americans each year.
