Genetic MutationsIntroductionA genetic mutation is a permanent change in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene. A mutation of this type can be caused by the parent's inheritance or caused at some time during someone's life. The inherited mutation is called a germline mutation. Germline mutations affect virtually the entire body and appear to be present in every cell. A somatic mutation, or one that occurs in the DNA of a single cell at some point in life, can be caused by an environmental factor or by a wrong bond in the DNA molecule. These cannot be passed on to the next generation of children because they occur in a specific cell instead of a reproductive cell. Some mutations occur in the embryo during growth. These can occur during cell division, and some cells may or may not inherit this mutation. Some mutations are extremely rare and others are incredibly common. Those that occur in more than 1% in a population are considered polymorphisms. Polymorphisms are considered normal DNA variations and are known to cause simple changes such as variations in blood types and hair color. While these are not generally fatal, they can influence the creation of some disorders (Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, USA.gov, 2013). Diseases Caused by Mutations Most diseases are caused by some type of genetic component. Many of the diseases caused by genetic mutations are undiagnosed. These remain undiagnosed because the disease is so rare that the doctor does not know how to diagnose the patient.
