Topic > Erwin Rommel: The Desert Fox - 1063

“The Desert Fox”Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel born on November 15, 1891 in Heidenheim, Germany, was one of the greatest military generals Germany has ever seen, perhaps one of the largest of the entire 19th century. He would later command huge Nazi military campaigns around the world with the rank of field marshal. Even as a young boy, Rommel was fascinated by how things worked and their efficiency, which later proved useful when it came to the military strategies and techniques he used during his service. At the age of fourteen Rommel had already built a hang glider with his peers, he also managed to take part of it and put together a brand new motorcycle. His future plans were to become an engineer considering his interest in mechanics and technology, but he changed course when he accepted his father's wish to join the army. At the age of 18 he joined the local Württemberg 124th Infantry Regiment as Fähnrich, this was the beginning of his legendary military legacy. Two years later he completed officer school and graduated as a second lieutenant. When chaos erupted in the Northeastern Hemisphere with the assassination of Archduke Fran Ferdinan. Germany, along with most European countries, entered the war due to their mutual military alliances in August 1914, which would later become the first World War ever fought in history. This is where Rommel found his reputation in battle as his battalion fought losing a quarter of its officers. Rommel constantly moved to the front lines to lead the fight. In a clash with the French Rommel fired a shot, shooting down two Frenchmen, quickly reloaded his weapon and went to get... middle of paper... a mock trial in the eyes of the public. This was because Rommel was well-liked by the German population and Hitler did not want to accuse him of treason for fear of upsetting the morals of the nation. Hitler then sent two high-ranking Nazi officers to Rommel's home and gave him two options. The first option was to take poison, most likely a cyanide capsule and commit suicide, or the second was to be summoned to court and then send his family to a concentration camp. That same afternoon he got into a car with Nazi officers and left; he was later pronounced dead that day. Immediately afterwards he was given a proper military funeral with lavish decorations and all his merits and awards were buried with him. Many scholars say he was born long after his time and refer to him as "Germany's Last Knight", a man who belonged to the 16th-century German Empire and not the evil Third Reich..
