Sustainability is about the healthy relationship between people, profit and the planet. Individual effort to earn money through commercial activity on earth should be harmless to the environment in which it operates and beneficial to the people who survive in that society. Individual effort to achieve sustainability is impossible without the support of companies. The company not only operates today, but aims for future success. BHP Billiton, on the other hand, is a multinational mining (i.e. metals, oil, coal, aluminium, manganese) company that believes environmental and social performance is vital to business. It operates in 17 countries, is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia and has been called the largest mining industry in the world, as demonstrated by its 2013 revenues. As a huge business, it also has a huge corporate responsibility, to the planet as a whole . Sustainability reporting is now a mandatory social report for companies to publish that explains the economic, environmental and social impact of the organisation's business and BHP Billiton has been shown to raise awareness of corporate transparency issues and increase accountability for responsiveness towards interested parties. Since environmental costs are difficult to identify, the company has been cooperating with its responsibility to society and the environment by publishing sustainability reports, annual health, safety, environmental and community reports for more than a decade. (Our Company, BHP Billiton, 2014). There must be accountability and disclosure of activities undertaken and how they are spent in order to explore corporate responsibility. Although BHP Billiton participates in a number of voluntary agreements on human rights and their implementation...... half of the document ......ds environmental reporting, sustainability reporting: its role towards society, of employees, resources and reserve current conditions. The company has successfully played the role of CSR by providing internal and external assurance to stakeholder groups through perfect disclosure of its actions and effects towards the environment through the "Corporate Governance Statement" in its annual report. According to BHP Billiton's 2013 annual report, “our purpose is to create long-term shareholder value through the discovery, acquisition, development and commercialization of natural resources.” It focuses on creating values, focusing on sustainability, integrity, respect, performance, simplicity and responsibility. The company's goal is to establish a successful relationship between the company's stakeholders by incorporating up-to-date social and environmental responsibility. (BHP Billiton Limited, 2013).
