It is important to be part of an organization that can support your ability as a counselor to serve your client to the best of their ability. Organizations with the American Counseling Association (ACA) are formed to assist counselors in joining organizations that interest them and are related to their fields or passions. There are three divisions within the ACA that differ in pace of purpose, but together they make a single sound that I want as a consultant. The American College Counseling Association, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, and the National Career Development Association are three divisions within the ACA that will help me further my skills and development as a counselor. These three divisions have different purposes; however, their overall value is to assist a community of people in our society who wish to learn how to be a better help to those in need of assistance. The American College Counseling Association (ACCA) is a division within the ACA that will benefit my practice as a student affairs professional. I'm interested in it because it focuses on higher education and student development. In my college career, I remember times when I would loiter in the Student Development office to borrow a copy of the Visions newsletter or a new publication within the Journal of College Counseling. My research proposal was based on student development theory and research within ACCA. I find it right to become a member of the division, so that I can receive my research material and have the opportunity to access the many resources that ACCA can offer. The Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD ) is a division within the ACA that will also benefit my practice as a student affairs professional and allow me to focus on the specific multicultural student clientele that I am passionate about . Another aspect of my research proposal in my undergraduate career was about multicultural students and their college success. Joining this division would help break down any barriers between me and clients I may have in my office who have a different background than me. It will help me feel comfortable handling any situation they are going through and need guidance in because I would have received the tools and information needed to direct them to the steps they need to take to reach their highest potential.
