The existence of God or rather of an intelligent being with definite abilities has been a controversial issue of discussion since time immemorial. There are as many people who support divinity in the creation of the universe as there are people who doubt the existence of this Supreme Being with unique and truly frightening abilities who designed and created the universe. Among the main supporters of the thought of the existence of God and perfect order in the creation of the universe is William Paley. William Paley brings forward one of the best arguments ever advanced in support of the existence of God and the nature in which the universe is bounded as sufficient proof of the existence of this divine being responsible for the materialization of the universe and its exact design. William Paley begins his argument by talking about a scenario, which involves him walking along a path. “During the walk he hits his leg against a rock but pays very little attention to the rock” (Paley, 2000, p.12). This is because deep down, if his mind knows that the rock has been there for a very long time, tending towards eternity. William Paley creates an alternate scenario with him traveling the same path. In this alternative scenario he happens to hit his leg on a clock. The reaction to the clock is very different from the reaction to the rock. William Paley states that this disparity between the clock and the rock is caused by a purpose. William Paley thus introduces the concept of telos. Telos means purpose. It is a term that refers to the exact purpose of a given object in the universe and exactly how this purpose relates to the object, as well as the level of perfection and skill to which this object in question fulfills... half of paper ...watching a movie is going to suck because it got some bad reviews. You can't just listen to these limited resources to define the big picture. Hume also states: “The universe does not show much order as there are many indications of disorder such as collisions of galaxies, black holes, novas and supernovas, cosmic radiation, gamma radiation, meteorite impacts, volcanoes, earthquakes” (“NOVA ." The Teleological Argument). So, again to Hume, how can there be true order if there are collisions of galaxies and many other disorderly things happening in the universe. Hume simply debunks Paley's argument and I tend to be agree with him wholeheartedly. It's just ridiculous to compare the complexities of a clock to the complexities of the entire universe. Both Paley and Hume present good arguments, but I agree with Hume when it comes to this topic.
