Speak slowly and clearly. We must remember to always speak slowly and clearly. If we rush what we are trying to communicate, big misunderstandings can arise. When this happens, it takes longer to resolve the confusion than to cause it. Berardo (2007) states to “focus on clearly enunciating and slowing down your speech. Even if you have little time, don't rush the communication”. Ask for clarification. No one understands everything completely 100% of the time. If you don't understand, or if others don't understand you, make sure you are polite when asking for clarification or giving it. Clarification can clear up any misunderstanding that may have occurred. Check for understanding often. Berardo (2007) states that “check both that you have understood what has been said and that others have fully understood you”. To do this, asking open-ended questions helps clarify meaning and gives you a way to check that others understand what you are asking them to do.
