The difference between the two stories is that Basil does not try to use the information against Dorian, but implores him to repent and offer a prayer to God: "Pray, Dorian, pray,” he murmured. “What are we taught to say in childhood? “Lead us not into temptation. Forgive us our iniquities.” Let us say it together your prayer of repentance will be answered” (p. 115). Yet, even as Basil takes responsibility and tries to help Dorian in his sin, the young man remains blind, for as Samson was captured and blinded by the Philistines, Dorian was captured. by the seductive words Lord Henry once spoke and was then blinded by his own vanity. Then at Basil's request he falters: "It is too late, Basil" (p. 115). a prayer: "'Though your sins be scarlet, I will make them white as snow'" (p. 115), after saying this, he becomes a martyr for Dorian.
