Topic > Women's right to vote in Britain - 1227

Women had a hard time in the mid-1800s; in Great Britain in particular. They had almost no rights, could only do certain jobs and could not vote. Women should have had more rights, or at least equal rights to those of men. Men were sexist against women; they didn't think women could reach the standards men were held to. It occurred mainly in the lower class, but the lower class and upper class were also victims. These women were not the richest, but they were not the poorest either, they were somewhere in the middle, average. Although women had very few rights, they fought for the rights they wanted and some didn't stop until they earned them. Of all the rights, women most wanted suffrage, or the right to vote. In my opinion women should always have had the right to vote. Millicent Fawcett led a movement known as The National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (Lewis, p. 1). She led this movement to get women what they all wanted, the right to vote. He once argued that “political power in many large cities would be primarily in the hands of young, poorly educated, reckless, and often rude girls” (Rylands, p. 1). These statements later led a former suffragist, Emmeline Pankhurst, to create a social and political union. She had a huge impact on what gave women the right to vote. She was part of many movements that led to women's suffrage. Subsequently, the Nineteenth Amendment was passed on August 18, 1920, guaranteeing all women the right to vote (Cornell University, Pg. 2). Voting is an important right. It is important because all human beings should have a say in something that will later be important to their city or community. To achieve it a person must be responsible and take things seriously. Women were looked at differently once they were... middle of paper... the way they were is not right. It's not like they did anything. It was decided and that was it. It took a lot longer to get rights than it did to establish that women shouldn't have rights. Women like Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony are truly an inspiration to women who stand up and fight for what they believe in. Look what happened thanks to these important people. There was an amendment for women to vote, we can work especially where we want, there is no segregation between men and women. Women don't just work at home, clean and take care of children, if so it's their choice. Now they earn money themselves, living in their property. This is what should have happened a long time ago, but hey, I'm glad it happened. I don't know where we would be without the important women who influenced the way women live today.
