IntroductionThe idea of racism has evolved and become less prevalent over the last century. Schools and public areas are not segregated, voting rights, racial slurs are considered unacceptable behavior, etc. American sociologist and race theorist, Howard Winant, states that "Subsequent approaches have increased recognition of racial injustice and inequality, but have not overcome discriminatory processes" (Winant,2000) Although the United States has come a long way to try to end racism, you can't ignore the fact that it still exists. It is something that may seem invisible in society, but everyone knows that it still thrives and that its racial attitudes affect the way our society functions. One of these invisible forms of racism is called microaggression. Microaggression is the theory that certain cross-race interactions can be interpreted as small acts of verbal aggression. Racial microaggression has caused many behavior and identity issues between races in today's society. In the article “Microaggressions in Everyday Life,” Dr. Derald Wing Sue states that “Microaggressions are similar to carbon monoxide – “invisible, but potentially lethal” – continued exposure to these types of interactions “can be a kind of death by a thousand cuts to the victim” It is a common experience that many people of different racial groups face in their daily lives. They are harmful to society, create a hostile environment, divide people, create inequalities and decrease productivity in the work and school environment. What is microaggression? Microaggressions can occur in any population with marginalized groups causing problems such as harassment and bullying. It's everywhere and people can experience it... middle of paper......://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/microaggressions-in-everyday-life/201102/how-does-oppression-microaggressions -affect -perpetrated February 17, 2014Sue, Derald “Racial Microaggressions in Everyday Life.” Retrieved: February 2014 Available: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/microaggressions-in-everyday-life/201010/racial-microaggressions-in-everyday-life11Sue, Derald, “Study:Racist Attitudes are still entrenched.” Retrieved February 2013 Available: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/microaggressions-in-everyday-life/201010/racial-microaggressions-in-everyday-life"Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."
