The author, William Faulkner, has a collection of books, short stories and poems under his name. Through his vast collection of works, Faulkner attempts to discuss and bring awareness to numerous aspects of life. More often than not, his works were created to reflect aspects of life found in the South. Family dynamics, race, gender, social class, war, incest, racism, suicide, necrophilia and mental illness are just some of the aspects explored by Faulkner. In “A Rose for Emily” aspects of necrophilia and mental illness along with social prejudices observed in a small town setting are seen as part of this compelling story. These aspects ultimately intertwine with the idea of madness that characterizes “A Rose for Emily”. Insanity is a medically diagnosed disease that demonstrates that a person is incapable of knowing right from wrong. There are many factors that contribute to a person becoming insane. Some of these factors include hereditary traits, prenatal environmental exposures, negative life experiences, and brain chemistry. Hereditary traits can lead to insanity because the genes that cause such disorders can be passed between relatives and family members. Environmental exposure before birth refers to the exposure of the fetus to viruses, bacteria or even toxins within the womb, which may be linked to one's mental illness. Negative life experiences such as losing a loved one, experiencing financial problems, and engaging in highly stressful situations can play a major role in triggering mental illness or mental breakdowns. Well, this is what she used to kill the man she thought she loved. Her fear of abandonment, mixed with her already messed up head, is what led her to commit those heinous acts. Evidence showed that she also slept next to Homer's corpse on the basis that there was an indentation on the second pillow with gray hairs found on it.
