Topic > Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Air Crash Victims

Accidents happen unexpectedly and the effects they cause can be serious depending on their nature. The effects caused by accidents vary in terms of severity and duration within which they affect individuals directly or indirectly linked to the accident. Plane crash is one of the deadliest and most reported accidents; there were more victims than survivors. The effects caused by a plane crash can be classified as physical or psychological. From a physical point of view, a plane crash causes death, disability and injury. The effects of the plane crash are determined by, among other things, the cause of the crash, the altitude and the speed at the time of the crash. Additionally, whether or not the plane catches fire after the crash is another factor that determines the severity of plane crashes. There have been situations where survivors of a plane crash succumbed to fires that broke out after hitting the ground. Since the accident limits mobility, most victims succumb helplessly before rescue teams arrive. Among the different categories of people affected by a plane crash are survivors, family and friends, members of the rescue team and healthcare workers caring for victims. Although survivors can be affected by both physical and psychological aspects, most indirect victims suffer from psychological problems. After the crash, there are people who manage to stay and in some cases leave the plane before the fire broke out. These people are mostly partially injured, but they see the others burning helplessly inside the plane. The experiences of direct or indirect victims lead to the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Epstein, Fullerton & Ursano 1998). This is a serious condition that affects people with disturbing pasts and who may have experienced shocking incidents. The problem manifests within an individual after the scenes of past experiences start to recur and disturb the peace and rational aspect of an individual. These people may start to hallucinate, have strange and terrifying dreams, and if not monitored in time, the disease may worsen. The physical defects that can occur after a plane crash differ depending on the impact and nature of the crash. While it may be worse for some, there are those who manage to escape with minor injuries. Survivors of the plane crash first develop stress and depression, combined with fear..
