At the top of the page Crooks is telling Lennie what would happen if George didn't come back, and if I had no one. Crooks says all these "what if" things because he doesn't have anyone by his side all the time. To describe this quote Crooks is talking to Lennie telling him that he has no body and that Lennie is lucky to have someone to take care of him. “Suppose you have no one. Suppose you couldn't go to the dorm and play rummy because you were black. Did you like it?" (68). Crooks feels like he has no one, so he explains how he has things going on in his life and wishes he could have someone to care about him in his life. No character in the book really cares about Crooks because he is different, so everyone is in the bunk except him playing rummy while he is sitting in his room alone To let the reader know how Crooks feels, Steinbeck uses characterization to show how Crooks thinks and feels Crooks talks about himself and explains to Lennie what it's like to have no one around you. “Sometimes he gets to thinking and has nothing to tell him what's so and what's not so it's tight or not. He can't turn to someone else and ask him if he sees it too. He has nothing to buy” (73).
