Also there are cars that have GPS built into the dashboard, but what did it take for GPS to become what it is today? Along with people, new automated cars are also benefiting from this technology, but we need to know the story behind the scenes to get a clear picture of what the needs and challenges were. GPS technology was invented inspired by Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite, which on October 4, 1957, a scientist from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) noticed that Sputnik caused a Doppler effect, meaning that the radio signals became stronger as that the satellite got closer to the receiver and fainter as it moved away. Therefore, MIT scientists realized that satellites can be monitored and tracked from the ground simply by measuring the frequencies they emit from their radio signals, and similarly, the location of the receiver can be revealed.
