Should the Washington Redskins change their name? One such stereotype used is that of Native American names and images for sports teams and in particular the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. While for many people this is a topic that has only recently emerged, the reality is that the debate over the use of Native names and images has been an ongoing issue for over 50 years. The topic of the Washington Redskins' name has been debated for many years in politics, the media, academia, religion, and the public square. The debate is divided into two parts. Those who oppose the use of the Redskins and all Native American names in sports, and perceive the use of such terms and images as racist and derogatory towards Native Americans, and those who retain the name who cite the history of team, its ties to the Native American players and coaches who were part of the team at the time of its creation...
