Gun Violence: Affects the Country and Its Citizens In 2010, there were more than 31,000 gun deaths in the United States: 62% were suicides, 36% were homicides and 2% were involuntary (2%) (CDC2012a). Nearly as many Americans die from gunshots as die from car accidents (nearly 34,000 in 2010). Americans under age 40 are more likely to die from gunshots than from any specific disease (CDC 2012a). Although there are so many incidents involving gun violence, not much is done to prevent them from occurring on a daily basis. These accidents have resulted in many people being injured or even killed, whether they were young children or an elderly woman in her 80s. Many people believe that these countries need to find better ways to prevent gun violence. There needs to be better ways to control the distribution of guns in the United States and around the world, because if there aren't, then there is always the risk of seeing a shooting or being on the wrong side of it. of violence in the United States involving guns, this has led some to ask: What is causing so much gun violence? Charles Derber, a professor of sociology at Boston College, believes that most people think about the failure of gun control and movies or simply those who are mentally ill from the high amount of gun violence ("Derber: "When Wars Come Home"). His thesis is that gun violence could be strongly related to the large military that the United States has spread throughout the world. In his statement, all weapons produced by the United States come back to the United States.
