A dystopia is an undesirable and frightening community or society. One group rules a dystopian society with a private agenda shrouded in euphemisms or outright lies. In works of art and literature, they are often characterized by: dehumanization, totalitarian government, technological progress, or other characteristics of catastrophic decline in society. Various works, such as films and novels, provide examples and images of a dystopia, a dysfunctional and perfectly imperfect society. Some works might even show us a dysfunctional world that might seem unrealistic; however, they each contain an element that portrays an allegorical meaning relating to aspects of our world. It's fascinating to see how different literary works can reveal the dystopian aspects of our society and the things we humans truly fear. Dystopias often begin with the illusion of a perfect society, or in other words, a utopia. But as the story progresses, both the reader and the characters realize that this fictional world is the opposite of perfection. The question I always ask myself is “Will our world be like this too?” Through films, short stories and novels, we can discern that the world is quite similar to the world we live in today or what it might be like in a later future. Human intelligence may slide downward to the point where we don't even know what water really is, or we may have a surveillance camera following us every minute of every day. Ultimately, through dystopian literature, we can see how similar our society is to those in novels, or simply what our society... middle of paper... ace, how some bravely react, and the way some they react cowardly or with resignation fascinates us. As readers, we cannot look away even as we are enraged by what other evil officials are doing to the citizens, and we are forced to turn the pages as we wonder whether the rebels and other members of the population can somehow turn a miserable society into something more positive. Our government could become tyrannical, we could have a surveillance camera following us every minute of every day, we could have our memories completely erased, etc. Society could dehumanize its citizens by forcing us to strictly conform to their expectations. Human intelligence can slide down to the point where we don't even know what water really is. These literary works amplify the dystopian world we live in today and illustrate and expose the dystopia our world could become in the future..
