Battle of Belleau Wood During World War I, the United States did its best to remain a neutral nation away from the fighting that was occurring in Europe. Despite this effort, with the constant threat of Germany, the United States was left with no choice but to enter the war in 1917. One of the major battles that the United States fought that effectively demonstrated its dominance, was the Battle of Belleau Wood. At the end of May 1918, German forces assembled four divisions and launched the Aisne Offensive. The bombing began at one in the morning on May 27. The British and French front lines were torn apart by the current waves of German infantry and artillery. Both armies began to disintegrate before the might of the Germans and were unable to stop the advance of their terrible force. The Germans pressed no further after the Marne River, giving the French time to ask for reinforcements and American assistance. When American forces arrived, a French office asked Marine Colonel Wendell C. Neville whether a tactical retreat was necessary....
