If there was a possibility that I had an allele that could change my life for the worse, I would obviously get tested. I'd rather make sure I understand the extent to which my genetic mutation might affect my life, rather than leave it to chance and ignore it. This is my personal opinion, but there are many other factors to consider when considering whether or not to undertake testing to better understand your genomic makeup. There is the question of whether or not the test has accurate enough results to give a person confidence in their body composition. Any information received from these genes would allow the individual to make decisions about their health, and therefore may not be perfect in allowing an individual to fully understand all the implications of the treatments they undergo to prevent a certain disease, perhaps increasing the risk to another. In testing for an allele that might produce something that could make an individual's life go terribly, the individual can only deepen their knowledge of themselves. The knowledge gained can only better inform them on how to make decisions about the future of their lives. While both sides must be considered, whether an individual can be happy and ignorant, or less happy and informed, is a personal choice. The choice I would make would be to deepen my knowledge because it would allow me to act if I have the ability, and it would improve my chances of knowing how to best deal with this particular characteristic. If I were to do this while ignoring the fact that my life might be affected by my genetic makeup, then I would live happier, but probably for a shorter period of time. In my opinion, the consequences of being… middle of paper… receiving the information damaged her mental state, but also gave her a wake-up call to live life a little more fully, which may not have been so negative. The information received from genetic tests on usable alleles is very important for the health of individuals, both in a physical sense, but also in an emotional/mental sense. Through genetic testing people are able to better perceive what their life will be like in the future and can better predict their life and plan to take action. While these actions may be taken in error, after hearing a life-threatening verdict from a doctor, people usually try to live life to a greater extent than if they had no worries in the world. It is precisely because knowledge allows people to make decisions where no information leaves everything to chance, I would like to have some control over an uncontrollable situation.
