Since the era of social media was invented, the technology is progressively improving every year. Social media incorporates online technology and methods for people to share personal opinions about content and exchange different perspectives. Social media can come in different shapes and forms such as text, images, listening to music, watching movies and many other things. While there are numerous benefits to using social media, there are many disadvantages such as damaged relationships, living in a virtual world, loss of communication, and possible addiction. Many of us are familiar with this scenario. A group of friends sit down to eat a meal together, laughing and catching up on the news but not necessarily interacting with the people in front of them. It's not strange for a couple at home to talk on their smartphone while checking Facebook and sending photos and messages to other people instead of talking to each other. Even with the most devoted couples, ordinary dialogues are too often replaced by time on endless social media sites. Smartphones and the Internet create obstacles between couples even in bed. We carry our smartphones with us everywhere, to college, work, the gym and many other places. Smartphones are with us everywhere we go and we don't feel how distracting it is. They demand our attention multiple times a day, a call or email notification or a thumbs up on Facebook. In our digital life, smartphones are part of our lives and prioritize the virtual world over the real one. It is important for us to post photos of our party on social media, sometimes even more important is the party itself. Smartphones are creating barriers on our relationships by making it nearly impossible to give your full attention to… the medium of paper… your cell phone 60 times. Checking your smartphone is an addiction. Students check their phones and text while the teacher lectures. Some people text while driving and clearly know that they are endangering their lives and the lives of others. Sometimes teenagers text each other even when they are sitting next to each other. Cell phone addiction can harm our schooling, affect our relationships with people and increase the chance of having car accidents. Today we have access to the highest communication technology and can talk and send messages to our friends anywhere in the world. We can read financial news while fishing by the river and use our cell phone navigation to find our next destination and locate the GPS of that location and send it to others, but we should be very cautious and warn cell phones are extremely addictive.
