However, some of these challenges have been rejected as part of the process of growing a democracy. One of the most important challenges has been the development of the political party system which has created a huge upheaval in the electoral structure. The conflict between John Adams as president and Thomas Jefferson as vice president was notably one of the greatest challenges to constitutional governance in the United States. Jefferson did little to support the presidency. Instead, he worked against it creating an unprecedented conflict (Schlesinger 65). During the elections of 1800, more problems occurred in the voting system, creating even more problems for the political class in the United States. To mitigate the problems experienced between Jefferson and Adams, political parties nominated presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
