Southwark Cathedral is the oldest cathedral church in London with evidence showing there may have been a church on the site since 606 AD It is located on the south bank of the River Thames, close to the London Bridge and acquired cathedral status in 1905 after becoming the seat of the Anglican bishop of the new diocese of Southwark (Sacred Destinations, 1995-2011). The Millennium Commission partly funded a renovation project of the cathedral which it was named after; Southwark Cathedral Millennium Project. The project was carried out from 1997 to 2001 based on a design by Richard Griffiths and involved the renovation of the existing churchyard and the creation of a new closed square associated with the new refractory building. The east courtyard of the church was designed as a new kitchen garden with herbs and shrubs containing medicinal and culinary uses. A new paved country court has also been constructed which is enclosed by the new buildings and a new planter containing a row of liquidambar trees on the northern side of the Cathedral. On the south side the space was redesigned to improve the quality of the fabric and make the space more usable (Myers, 2004). The new entrance courtyard and building were designed to show that they have always been there (Emap Limited, 2002-2010). The project used numerous resources including manpower and money to achieve its objectives. But the evaluation upon its completion shows that there were some positive aspects and also negative outcomes of the project. Therefore it is right to compare both the negative and positive aspects in order to come to an overall verdict and conclusion on the success achieved and failures/challenges encountered... middle of paper...// www.robertmyers-associates .co.uk/projects/Southwark_Cathedral.htm.Sacred Destinations, (1995-2011).
