Topic > Elder Abuse and Abuse - 1776

In today's society, particularly in long-term care facilities, there have been numerous reports and incidents of elder neglect and abuse. Although personal support workers walk a very fine line between what could be considered neglect and what could be considered abuse, there are no rules regarding this gray area, which could potentially be the cause of accidents. "It was once said that the moral test of government is how the government treats those who are in the dawn of their lives, the children; those who are in the twilight of their lives, the elderly, and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and others; (Hubert Humphrey) How will Canada be viewed if we cannot do more to care for the elderly in our society? It is important to also write to our leaders and legislative representatives to ask for support and a hand in addressing the national contagion of elder abuse, which affects our elderly and infirm, and to focus on solving problems related to accountability and accountability that allow abuse and neglect to occur. According to many different studies conducted, approximately one in four older adults living in long-term health care are abused, but only a small amount of these cases are reported and an even smaller amount are treated (Cooper et al., 2013). But what exactly is meant by abuse? All studies have this aspect in common; all agreed that abuse is “a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person” . (Post et al., 2010) Abuse also falls into many different subcategories such as: mental, emotional, physical, and...... middle of paper ...... personal. Workers who feel powerless are less likely to speak out against others. If they potentially had more power, they might appreciate being workers more and believe that with better teamwork and more time they could provide higher quality care. Provided something is not done soon to stop this growing problem in Canada, then tomorrow, when we are old and frail, we will pay back the proceeds of our inaction when any of us could turn into a victim of this national misfortune. Through cooperation, imparting and urging the government to support specific administrations for victims of elder abuse and neglect, everyone should achieve our goal of giving the elderly a life free from abuse and segregation and fill it with self-respect, freedom, sharing , equality and security. With these simple steps, Canada can take a step in the right direction to stop elder abuse.
