Topic > Essay on Slums - 1045

Slums have existed in Egypt for four decades now. Similar to any other slum in the world, the Egyptian one also suffers from a lack of water, sewerage, waste disposal, education and healthcare. The UNHABITAT definition of a slum is a “group of individuals living under the same roof who lack one or more of the following conditions: access to drinking water, access to improved sanitation, secure tenure and sufficient living areas.” (cn.unhabitat.org). The number of slums in Egypt is 1,221 areas. Those slums are occupied by nearly 70.17 million inhabitants. (“Slums in Egypt”. Egypt.electionnaire.com ). Slums are caused by many factors. First of all the young migrant workers, in rural areas young people don't have many job opportunities, so they start moving to urban areas in search of their dream city and better opportunities. Secondly, poverty is like a genetic disease inherited and transmitted from one generation to another, which makes it impossible to escape. Thirdly, lawlessness, unequal distribution of wealth and inequality are also the main causes of slums. Last but not least, the poor generally believe that the more children they have, the better their life is, but in reality it affects them negatively and they end up not being able to feed their children. The effects of slums not only affect their inhabitants, but also the surrounding neighborhoods and the government. Furthermore, growing up in slums leads to school dropout; which generates inequality of opportunities and causes inhabitants to remain stuck in dead-end jobs. The living conditions that the inhabitants face also make them exposed to numerous diseases. The stakeholders in this issue are donors, the government, slum communities, some NGOs (UNCHS, Cities Alliance, UNDP, UNICEF and ILO), national partners and businesses. highly effective. The project works briefly in this sequence; the Cities Alliance finds slums and redevelops them to make them a suitable place for people to live. The strength of this project is that it improves the slums and does not force the inhabitants to move from their hometown, legalizing land for them and last but not least it makes jobs available for them near them. However, the solution does not solve any of the root causes of slums, as it has not brought any benefit to those who are the cause of slums. There are dozens of solutions to this problem, but the most perfect one is the Cities Alliance project. This project is missing one point that would make it impeccable, Cities Alliance should have taken into consideration the people who created the slums in the first place, worrying not only about the effects of the slums but also about the causes of the slums.
